A Salute to our Physicians
CTD wants to salute the many Connect the Docs’ physicians that selflessly give of themselves to go beyond our borders and reach out to those in need with medical assistance. Stay tuned to our website as we begin to showcase videos, pictures and articles from the many Medical Missions that our physicians have participated in.

Med4Nicaragua Medical Mission – Nicaragua
A team of 22 medical and non-medical volunteers from Scripps Encinitas Hospital and the surrounding communities, travelled to Nicaragua for a week in April 2011 to provide much needed medical and surgical care to the people of Nicaragua. The Med4Nicaragua team, co-founded and led by Dr. Christine Brody, a Scripps Encinitas Ob/Gyn physician, was able to perform 33 major and minor surgical procedures over a 3 day period. The medical supplies were all donated and then transported by the team in 30 suitcases. A wide variety of medical problems were surgically treated including gallstones, ovarian cysts, hernias, and heavy uterine bleeding among others. Patients travelled as far as 15 hours by bus to be seen and evaluated for surgery.
The team also spent some time at the Casa Bernabe Orphanage in Managua where more than 80 children ranging in age from 5 to 20 years old reside. Team members provided some basic health education to the children and brought to the orphanage medicine, school supplies, and clothing for the children.

Solomon Islands Living Memorial Program - Solomon Islands
The Solomon Islands Living Memorial Program recognizes the United States' shared history with the people of Solomon Islands and also the current healthcare needs of the country. The program supports regular medical and surgical care outreach visits provided by American healthcare specialists, but more importantly, it provides teaching and surgical education support to the doctors and nurses of the Solomon Islands so they may improve the delivery of care to their own people while developing their professional careers.
The Solomon Island Living Memorial Project focuses on improving access to surgical care through out the Solomon Islands. At present all surgical care is provided at the National Referral Hospital (NRH) on Guadalcanal.
The Solomon Island Living Memorial Project works with surgeons at NRH on advancing their surgical skills. Improving the standard of surgical care at NRH is their top priority in order to make this hospital the center of excellence for the country. Volunteer US surgical specialists such as ENT and GI surgeons provide lectures, clinics and workshops on much needed topics. These Continuing Medical Education visits bring topic updates directly to the doctors in Solomon Islands. They donate medical textbooks, reference materials and advanced medical and surgical equipment and are working on acquiring a CT scanner. Doctors stay in regular contact with the surgeons and anesthesiologists in Solomon Islands using email. This allows them to discuss patient care as well as future training needs and plans.
